Rhodes & Cowan earn good seeds

Absegami juniors George Rhodes and Sean Cowan both earned very good seeds to this weekend’s NJSIAA State Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Rhodes, 33-4 at 175 pounds, is seeded sixth after his second place finish at Region 8. Cowan, 32-6 at 157, is seeded tenth after his third place finish at Region 8.

In the first round Rhodes will face 27th seed Jay Stokes of Shawnee, who is 26-7. Stokes defeated Absegami’s Caiden Hurley with a 2:24 pin this season. Rhodes has lost to top seed Shay Addison of Rumson-Fair Haven 6-1. He is 2-0 versus eighth seed Hunter Perez of Mt. Olive. He is 1-2 versus fifth seed Jared Schoppe of Delsea. He has a 5-3 win over 13th seed Vincent Lee of Delbarton. He defeated 19th seed Chris Olah of Camden Catholic. Seventh seed Harvey Ludington of Brick Memorial defeated Rhodes 13-1 on January 15. Rhodes also defeated 26th seed Braydon Castillo of Lower Cape May 5-2.

Cowan will wrestle 23rd seed Devon Turner of Dumont in the first round. Turner is 29-5. Cowan lost to top seed Simon Ruiz of Delbarton 12-2 and second seed Dakota Morris of Kingsway 19-3. Third seed Tanner Peake of Hunterdon Central defeated Cowan 5-1. Cowan won two of three matches with Ocean City’s 12th seeded Charley Cossaboone of Ocean City.
